Poultry Day

Rose (who looks like she's wearing a hat), Goldie, Blanche and Henrietta
Before September 1, 2012, it wouldn’t have occurred to me to celebrate Poultry Day. What a difference six months and nineteen days make!

I suspect Jay spent too much time reading verses in Psalms about hiding under the shadow of God’s wings, and they made him long for backyard chickens. I thought it was a phase and tried to wait him out. When he brought up the subject, I’d respond cryptically by quoting random bird verses like Job 39:13, “The ostrich flaps her wings grandly, but they are no match for the feathers of the stork.” I’d raise one eyebrow, nod mysteriously, and wander off.

It didn’t work.

Gradually, Jay wore me down. I finally told him, “I don’t like birds, and I don’t like eggs, but I do like you. So, if you’re determined to bring chickens into our life...” I generously added, “I’ll somehow try to cope.” Well, he never heard the last part because he was already in the yard building a coop. A couple months later, I became a reluctant chicken mommy to four Golden Comet biddies.

Recently, I showed Jay a beautiful ring on Etsy.com of a nest with eggs. Even though Poultry Day was clearly marked on our calendar, there was no nest ring waiting for me.

Is it too much to ask to expect a man to remember my birthday, our anniversary, and Poultry Day?

Verse of the day:   (Eph 4:2) "...with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love..." even if they want backyard chickens.

  1. Yay!! I'm soooo glad you have a blog :). Bill would SO have chickens right now if our homeowners assoc. would allow! And I LOVE eggs. Anyway, I am thrilled you are writing- which is one of the reasons you were created :).

  6. I agree with Gisele - we would have chix too if our HOA allowed it! Boo!

  7. Actually, someone who took a class informed me that HOAs can't refuse you having chickens as long as you don't plan to eat them. Then they're not considered "livestock," but pets. If you had a rooster they could refuse on the basis of noise disturbance (roosters crow all day long--which is why we don't have one), but chickens are quiet. Of course, the HOA might resist whether it's legal or not and might be mad at you for winning your right to keep chickens...

  8. Pamela, first of all I need to apologize for my always late response. I am fashionably one week late, and yes, I like to think of it as fashionably! I LOVE your blog. You are a precious gem! It makes my midweek Wednesday have reason for smiles and giggles! I even have a quick link saved on my iPhone so I can read it in the grocery line if need be, where I will be purchasing eggs that are probably way too old. I loved the Ephesians verse. I am always long suffering in my marriage, and it is the perfect verse to hold close in my heart for encouragement and comfort. :-) Lastly, my most important piece of advice: If you want something enough, you MUST purchase it yourself! Yup, it's the only foolproof way... And believe me, I'm good at it! ;-)

    1. Thank you, Leora! And you're always fashionable. I think an egg ring will be shipped to Jay just in time for my birthday. I'll put it with the card he'll forget to sign. He won't have to put any effort into shopping for me, I'll get my ring, and we'll both be happy! ;o)

    2. Attagirl! That's the way it's done! Tom has learned over the years to ask me: "So, what did I get you for your birthday this year?" ;-)

  9. The chickens should get the gifts on Poultry Day, not you!
